  1. Cannibal Holocaust fully achieves what it set out to do. Its so good at what it does, it still one of the most depraved and reviled horror movies, even after 30 years. Its interesting to see how newer horror fans think that the likes of Hostel push the envelope too far, whereas CH did far more so long ago.

CH is a bit of a contradiction…the haunting score by Riz Ortolani and beautiful cinematography by Sergio D’Offizi seem at odds with the upsetting content. The structure of the movie, with its opening investigation leading to the cinema verite 2nd half, was true genius however the acting is quite typical for exploitation cinema featuring mainly non-US actors (ie not that good).

To be honest, I’ve never had the stomach for the real animal killings, and this is perhaps my biggest problem with the movie overall. Excisizing these scenes still leaves a highly effective movie that assaults the senses at every turn.

    A true genre classic.

I’m interested to see how The Green Inferno does (Eli Roth’s upcoming movie)…Roth does have a love for the genre, and cannibal movies have pretty much been overlooked for many years (well tribal cannibal movies anyway). Its hard to see how any newer cannibal films could surpass the nastiness made by the Italians back in the 70’s and 80’s, and I can’t see any major studio releasing anything that would come close.
